TV tonight: ‘30 Rock’ juggles 2 clever plotlines
TONIGHT’S MUST-SEE: “30 Rock,” 9:31 p.m., NBC
Liz has a rare moment of pleasure tonight. She’s written a book about “deal-breakers” that should cause someone to dump a guy.
Now every guy she knows is mad at her – especially Tracy, who fits into all the rules, including the one of not marrying a guy whose necklace says “open marriage” in diamonds.
That’s one of two clever plotlines tonight. Another has Jack battling his old nemesis (played by Will Arnett) while trying to redesign microwaves to appeal to guys.
There are also silly moments – Kenneth at a dog shelter, Jenna in Iceland – but “30 Rock” is like that. It’s smart enough to win three straight Emmys, silly enough for a broad audience.
TONIGHT’S MIGHT-SEE: “The Jeff Dunham Show” debut, 9 p.m., Comedy Central.
After drawing huge audiences with his stand-up specials, Dunham gets his own series. In the style of the Dave Chapelle and Frank Caliendo shows, he talks to the audience between short films.
Those films involve his dummies – yes, Dunham is a ventriloquist – which is good and bad. Moments involving Walter or Achmed the Dead Terrorist are terrific; others are childish. Enjoy some moments, forgive others.

30 Rock TV Series Summary
“30″ Rock centers on a comic (Tracy Morgan), who stars in a late-night comedy show called “The Girlie Show.” Tina Fey stars at the head writer who works hard to keep her job as well as her sanity as she deals with the network and the stars.

Along with Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, 30 Rock was one of two NBC series of the 2006-2007 TV season to take place backstage at a Saturday Night Live-style comedy show. In the case of 30 Rock, “SNL” veteran Tina Fey served as series creator and executive producer, and also assumed the leading role of Liz Lemon, head writer of the ficitional comedy-ensemble series “The Girlie Show.” Liz was placed in the none-too-skilled hands of novice network executive Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), whose previous experience had been confined to the offices of the network’s corporate owners (clearly General Electric).

At Jack’s behest, the long-suffering Liz was compelled to hire irresponsible and highly temperamental movie comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan). Jordan’s intrusion upon the “Girlie Show” set did not rest well with lead comedian Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), and thus Liz ended up being less a writer and more a referee. A 30 Rock debuted October 11, 2006.
